Cataract

A cataract is a large waterfall.

Definition:

Significance: There are five cataracts in the Nile River.

Delta

Defintion: Delta's are wetlands that form as rivers empty their water and sediment into another body of water.

Significance: The Nile River is a perfect example of a delta.

Shadoof

Definition: A pole with a bucket and counterweight, especially used in ancient Egypt for raising water.

Significance: Shadoofs were used for raising water in ancient Egypt.

Papyrus

Definition: A material prepared in ancient Egypt from the pithy stem of a water plant. Used for writing, drawing, and also making rope, boats, and sandals.

Significance: Scribes in ancient Egypt used papyrus to write down imporatant events.

Incense

Defenition: A material that produces a pleasent smell when burned.

 

Significance: Egyptians burned incense, when in need of a plesant smell.

Envoys

Definition: A goverment representative to another country.

 

Significance: The Egyptians exchanged envoys.

Pyramid

Definition: A great stone tomb built for an Egyptian pharaoh.

 

Significance: Pyramids sometimes contained traps to keep burglers away.

Embalming

Definition: The process of treating a body to keep it from decaying.

 

Significance: Embalmers embalm the body to keep it from decaying.

Dynasty

Definition: A line of rulers from one family.

 

Significance: The 11th dynasty of pharoahs.

Definition: Goverment by religious leaders.

 

Significance: The Egyptians had a theocracy.

Bureaucrats

Definition: A goverment official.

 

Significance: The pharaoh appointed bureaucrats to carry out his orders.

Pharoah

Definition: Ruler of Ancient Egpyt.

 

Signifcance: There were many dynastys of pharoahs in ancient Egpyt.

Hieroglyph

Definition: A stylized picture of an object representing a word, syllable, or sound, as found in ancient Egyptian and other writing systems.

 

Significance: Egyptians wote with hieroglyphics.

Red land, black land

Definiton: The 'black land' was the fertile land on the banks of the Nile. The 'red land' was thebarren desert that protected Egypt on two sides.

 

Significance: The Egyptians had the black land, and the red land.
